Rant on UNI. *looks at QUT*

Real. Yes. Real. REAL BULLSHIT.

Its times like this, what is the point really of going to university? You spend tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention time and effort for what? A piece of paper that says your qualified to do something or other. I mean ok, lets go through this. At the end of a 3 year business course, are you really going to remember everything you learnt in 1st year?

I challenge anyone to show me one subject in university that you cant learn yourself. Why are we forced to pay tens of thousands of dollars and jump through these hoops of assignments and tutorials when someone who was truly dedicated could just read the appropriate books and gain the right work experience and be at the same level as a new graduate. I mean, in areas such as IT, people who REALLY want to get into the industry are more or less self taught. You don’t need to go to uni to learn how to use linux. Even computer noobs can learn how to use linux. (sorry im just resenting how much time I was forced to waste learning bullshit linux using terminal. Comletely put me off linux for ever…until i met ubuntu 8.04 live dvd..but thats another story..available here: ubuntu 8.04 <3 )

Tutors and Lecturers piss me off. Well not all of them. Some I can actually vouch for being good and decent people. However, the rest. Well the rest can go die in a hole somewhere. They’re just useless wastes of oxygen with over-inflated senses of self importance.

Considering QUT is the famous “university of TECHNOLOGY” , you would assume the staff would be rather tech savvy. I found it pretty funny that half the tutors and lecturers don’t even know how to use the IT equipment there, eg. light control with the touch screen, using powerpoint (I LOL’ed), 1 lectuere didnt even know how to login to QUT virtual. Her excuse was something along the lines of “I’m not a full time teacher here.” ..umm wtf? what does that have to do with anything? Does a part time student go, ahh shit. I don’t know how to login to QUT virtual either since im not a full time student? hmm guess i don’t need to do that homework anymore. hoho.

I want to meet the idiot who decided 8-10am and 7-9 pm lecs were a good idea. Sure, people who work need to go to uni in some cases too, so i get why these classes exist, however, it really confuses me when they FUCKING ONLY HAVE 1 CLASS at either of the mentioned times.

You know what’s worse? When you actually attend these classes, only to have the lecturer drone on for 2 hours in the same monotone voice while LITERALLY reading the slides. If i wanted to hear the slides read out,  I would have just stayed home and studied it myself.

Why not skip and read it at home you say? Well see.. i already do that. But the stupid part about it, is im paying ludicrous amounts of money just to have the privilege of attending these types of lecturers.

On the topic of lectures still, WTF is up with nearly all the classes in business becoming three hour straight lecs? FUCK YOU QUT. FUCK YOU. I know attendance in lecs and tuts are falling. BUT WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU CARE? YOU STILL GET MONEY. That’s not a valid reason for sticking us with three hour straight lectures.

TUTORS.OMG. TUTORS. hoho.  Uni tutors (notice the emphasis on uni tutors. I’m just a English tutor. We’re like a different breed. Plus, I’m FUCKING AWESOME ) can go suck a dick for all I care. Like i said, some are really nice people who make going to uni actually bearable. However, some. some are just annoying. Just because I dont smile at them or for some other unbeknown reason is no reason to mark me down on assignments/quizzes which are perfectly correct ok? I’m not one of those pro active students who will trip over themselves just to answer every one of your questions, but it does not mean i want to get involved in discussion either. OK? If i look away when i look at you. That means. NO I DONT WANT TO ANSWER YOUR FUCKING QUESTION ok? k. thx.

One more final thing.

GROUP WORK.

Anyone know about QUT’s LEX surveys? Every time I bother to do it, I write something along the lines of, please, i would rather you cut out the group work components, even if i meant doing another piece of assessment or two, I would be fine with that. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that 99% of QUT students are going to feel the same way about this.

QUT’s stance on group work is “well when you get to the “real world” (WHICH I THOUGHT WE WERE ALREADY IN? !!!) you’re going to be working with other people, so now is a good time to get experience”

hmm. BULLSHIT. Yes. You will be working in teams. But here’s how it usually goes down. Your team meets up. The boss divvys up the work between you all. Then you split up and do your own work. Then just stick it all together in the end. And you know what happens if you do you work to an acceptable grade? YOU GET FIRED.

Not just fail the assessment. YOU GET FIRED. People don’t treat uni like work ok? SO QUT. CUT THE BULLSHIT. GET BETTER TUTORS. CUT THE FUCKING TEAMWORK SHIT. AND STOP FUCKING RAISING THE HECS/TUTORIAL FEES.
